Moving schools...to me means a fresh start! Since I will be teaching reading and writing this year I figured my classroom library was the place to start. I'm not going to lie, in the past my library has been half way done, sort of organized and not at all kept up with. I know I have books that have 'wondered' off over the past few years (I will cover how I am going to work on that in my next post). My first step was to take all my books, 1 by 1 and relevel them and to organize them by genre.
Years ago I purchased an IntelliScanner to help keep track of all my books.
Every summer I had the intentions of scanning every single one of my books and categorizing and leveling them... I always started....and never finished. Well...not this time!! I am happy to report that I am ALMOST done...I am hoping this blog post will keep me motivated to finish!
I started with my boxes of books on my living room floor....Now....the last couple summers I accomplished so many things on my to do list.....but this summer with a 7 month old baby...it makes it a little harder. My little Evie takes 3 naps a day anywhere from a half hour to an hour and a half. THAT is when I squeeze in my workouts, my house cleaning and my school projects. School work has been slow, it's usually last on my to-do list each day.
BUT, my library is almost done!

(My piles of books...each with a sticky note to say the genre and guided reading level..until I can make permanent labels)
I started by scanning the bar code with my IntelliScanner to log the book on my computer. Then I used the Scholastic Book Wizard to look up the Guided Reading Level of each book and I used it to help me decide on the genre. I'm so glad I didn't rely on my old Guided Reading Levels because some of them have changed!
(My IntelliScanner screen on the left, and Scholastic Book Wizard on the right)
This is still a work in progress , but I am so happy that I am almost done with step one! As soon as I finish leveling the books I plan on making labels both for the books and for the book baskets.
Stay tuned...more to come on my library progress!
How do you organize your classroom library? Mommy teachers---how do you squeeze in time to get school work done and be a good mommy!
Laura

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am SLOWLY collecting books for a classroom library and went through and leveled them. How do you organize them in a library? That's what I've been trying to figure out.
